Rupert Read

Dr Rupert Read is a Green Party City Councillor in Norwich. The Greens are a strong opposition party in the city, with 20 Councillors. Rupert Read

Rupert was the lead Green Party European candidate for the Eastern Region in June 2009. He is now our candidate for the by-election in Norwich North caused by the resignation of Dr Ian Gibson, the Greens are expected to do well.

He wants improved, more sustainable transport policies, and he promotes renewable energy sources to counter man-made climate change.

Rupert is Reader in Philosophy at the University of East Anglia. His work is on environmental and political philosophy.

Green Representation in Norwich North

Rupert wants to see local public services protected and enhanced, it is a scandal that 70% of dentists in the seat no longer take new NHS patients.

He also wants to protect the beauty of the rural part of the seat, of benefit both to those who live in this the northern part and to city residents wanting to escape,, he opposes the construction of a NDR which would destroy a large part of the Greenbelt.

Rupert along with the Conservative candidate have also co-signed a pledge to campaign in a clear and open manner not attacking personalities and policies of the other parties but promoting positive visions of change.

Rupert's Current Campaigns in the Region:

  • Saying ‘No' to Stansted expansion
  • Working against proposed quarry in the Broads National Park
  • Campaigning to prevent the building of waste incinerator at Rivenhall Airfield
  • Campaigning to stop new road-building in Essex.

Bringing 20mph Speed Limits to Norwich

Rupert's proudest achievement in politics so far, is the new 20mph speed limit for residential areas in Norwich. This wouldn't have happened without a motion from Rupert on the ‘Joint Highways Agency Committee'.

He has also played a major part in the success of Norwich Green Party in recent elections. The Green Party now wins a larger share of the vote than any other Party in Norwich.
